Summary

Taking part in the European Clean-Up Day which slogan is “Let’s Clean Up Europe!” and teaming up to clean up the environment and tackle the waste issue allows participants to realize how much waste is dumped in their own neighbourhood. Participants can be businesses, educational establishments, public administrations, citizens, associations, NGOs etc. Once they have identified a place to clean, action developers register their action with the coordinator responsible for their area. They collect litter and share ideas about the 3Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!

Partners of the LIFE12 INF/BE/0000459 project: AICA (International Association for Environmental Communication); ACR+ (Association of Cities and Regions for Recycling and Sustainable Resource Management); ARC (Agencia de Rsiduos de Catalunya); IBGE (Institut Bruxellois pour la Gestion de l’Environnement); NWMD (National Waste Management Directorate Hungary)

Headline Finding

5,982 clean-up actions, 472,177 participants involved and over 6,000 tonnes of waste collected during LCUE actions in May 2016.

Considerations

Coordinators noticed an increased awareness during and after the event. Some of them suggested to send even more detailed communication earlier to ease practical organization of actions; the wish for more clean-up tools usually provided by local sponsors, coordinators or the local authority in charge of waste management (e.g. gloves, bags, etc.) was expressed.
